On Thursday, November 2nd, 2023 we had a fundraiser at Brian Boru. Proceeds benefitted our 2023-2024 Scholarship Fund and Belle Grove ES Community Service Project. See the photo for the delicious dinner menu!
On Sunday, October 1, 2023 we had Kick-off Meeting at 2-4 pm hosted by Omega Member Kerri Allen Principal of Belle Grove Elementary. There we decided we were going to adopt Belle Grove as our Community Service Project. One major part of this included donating canned goods or funds for Harvest for the hungry. Additionally, we donated coats and clothing for all ages to the school for their school clothing giveaway. Likewise, donations were included for the school shop for students to use their Bulldog Bucks to purchase presents for family members. Additionally, throughout the year we plan to do additional donations of gift cards for the teachers, and food items for a holiday luncheon for the faculty and staff one day of their last week of school before the holiday break. What a wonderful way to make people's day!!
Here is the WBALTV news story about Belle Grove Elementary: https://www.wbaltv.com/article/harvest-for-the-hungry-kids-helping-kids-campaign/41847583
December 21st note from Kerri Allen:
Dear Friends,
Thank you for the delicious lunch yesterday. The staff was so excited to have lunch provided for them. It was the highlight of the day. This time of year can be stressful for our students, so it was wonderful to have an opportunity for the faculty to relax and enjoy the amazing lunch. Everyone is so grateful that DKG has supported Belle Grove this year. You are really making a difference in the staff morale and letting them know that teachers support teachers. Attached are a few pictures from the luncheon and below is the post from our social media account. I hope everyone has a great holiday.
Gratefully, Keri Allen. Principal, Belle Grove Elementary

October 20th Email from Keri Allen:
Hello everyone,
I can't put into words how grateful I am for everyone's generosity. The donations of food have kept the school store up and running. The students are so excited to "shop" and bring their donations back to their classroom. The boxes are stacking up to give to the Anne Arundel Food Bank. Additionally, the staff has felt so appreciated with the gift cards. We have a Friday gift card raffle and also raffled off a few during our Equity PD. This was such a nice uplighting way to celebrate and recognize all of the hard work staff members are doing everyday for our students. I shared with the staff that all of this support came from fellow educators and that made it even more special.
Thank you again-I feel so fortunate to be a part of this amazing group!

Our 50th Anniversary luncheon was a grand success at the Crofton Country Club on May 21st, 2023. It perfectly captured Omega's GOLDEN Anniversary. All 25 members and guests contributed to the success of this event. Marsha Stewart, Pat Clark, Cheryl Townshend, and Jessica Meadows spent months plotting out the perfect afternoon adorning the room with red and gold decor. Betty Hepler, an Original member since 1973, played welcoming music and created a song in honor of this special day. Vicki Dabrowka devoted endless hours to gather photos from years past to create a rolling slideshow through the afternoon honoring members past and present members. 3 members of the DKG MD Executive Board attended sharing their personal "WHY DKG?" message. The incoming State President, Sally Nazelrod delivered her Vision of Success for the 2023-2025 Biennium. Omega’s President, Casey Perkins joined the festivities with her new baby in arms (who was an angel all afternoon.) Mary Brett, a Founding Member, so eloquently prepared opening remarks equating our Chapter’s history to the message in The Little Engine that Could!

We had 3 DKG MD Scholarship winners present who each received a round of applause- Casey Perkins, Jessica Meadows, and La Tanya Eggleston from Rho. Karen Yancey wowed us with her recognition as the Maryland State Financial Literacy Teacher of the Year Award. Rochelle House created excitement around donations to Omega’s Betty Ann White Scholarship. Jeannie Haugh explained she is collecting consignment items to augment Omega’s Scholarship fund. DKG Rockin’ the Red explanation was led by an enthusiastic Donna Barnes sharing about the upcoming June 2nd American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
Omega’s time capsule from 2013 when Cheryl Townshend was State President was opened by Omega’s long time historian Lorraine Taylor. We were grateful for the presence of Nancy Andrews who eloquently explained the value of attending DKG State, National and International opportunities. For 45 years, Alverta Darden, has attended so many Omega events, and May 21st was another opportunity for this member to join the celebration. Throughout the luncheon, Pat Clark served as raffle hostess awarding so many in attendance with bonus gifts including the beautiful vase centerpieces filled with red roses. As all 25 guests exited the event, everyone received a goodie bag compliments of Pat. The reviews confirm it was an exciting afternoon celebrating DKG and Omega!
Here are some pictures of our joyous day of celebration, memories, and sisterhood. Also below is the photo slideshow that was shared at our 50th Anniversary of our last 10 digital years of pictures. Be sure to click through them with the arrows at the bottom left hand corner.

Highlights from: 2021-2022
- On June 3rd, DKG Omega was Rockin the Red before, during and after this year’s Relay for Life! For the 3rd year, Omega took action for our DKG Purpose #7 to participate effectively in the world and supported the American Cancer Society. This year’s Relay theme was Survivor*Safari* Jungle. Thanks to all who volunteered that evening, donated luminarias in memory of loved ones, and contributed to our team goal. As a chapter, we raised $2,087 and the entire event raised over $40,000 to stomp out cancer! Special thanks to Casey Perkins, Marsha Stewart, Jeannie Haugh, Rochelle House, Kyler Kamp, Sue Errichiello, Dianne Lloyd, Nancy Andrews, Cheryl Townshend, Mary Brett, Pat Clarke and Betty Hepler for the energy you brought to our Lion King Booth!
- Photos below from the May 14th Leadership Workshop. Betty Hepler kicked the morning off with music. Marsha Stewart attended The Energy Bus session. Jean Marie Hoffstetter participated in the Mindfulness presentation. Our new Chapter President Casey Perkins joined in the trading of new Presidents. Once again, Omega was well represented at the state level.
- Our Sunday, March 20th meeting was at Jessica Meadow's home where 12 of us gathered for community and discussion. Many of our conversations centered around the DKG Blog & Collegiate Exchange. Not only did we discuss how both have loads of resources, but our members broke into two group led by Keri Allen and Laura Skeele to discuss specific articles. We also discussed our underfunded treasury and Scholarship Fund due to having had little to no opportunities to raise money over the past several years. Alverta Darden, a long time member of Omega, is being honored on May 29th by her church for 40 years of service to the Interdenominational Church Ushers Association’s Educational Department. How wonderful!
- Omega sponsored our annual holiday brunch which is held with Epsilon and Rho chapters. It was on December 4th at The Severna Park Elks Lodge and we had nearly 4 dozen folks in attendance. The atmosphere was wonderful, music delightful, and brunch was delicious as usual. So nice gathering together again for this annual traditions. Holiday donations went to the Anne Arundel County Food Bank. Special guest speaker Jennifer Keats Curtis, local environmental children's book author, came down with laryngitis, so we were blessed to have Cheryl Queen. She spoke to us about her experience researching her family history and genealogy, having to go back to the 1800s to analyze records from a time when enslaved family histories were kept in plantation owner books. We certainly were all richer from having learned of her connected family and all of her story telling of her work as family historian and detective. This event is always such a nice way to kick off the holiday season!!
- We inducted our newest member Teresa Beilstein on November 13th at a late mornign meeting at Jessica Meadows' home. Here are some photos from that in person event:
- The morning of November 6th was the DKG Maryland State Organization Virtual Workshop. Zooming in, music was led by our own Betty Helper. Opening and Closing remarks were from Upsilon's President Dr. Marilyn Keane. The sessions included:

Welcoming in our New President for 2018--2019: Karen Yancey
Congratulations to Karen Yancey for taking on the role of our new Chapter President. Karen is a 3rd Grade teacher at Davidsonville Elementary. This is her 3rd year as a public school teacher. She homeschooled her 4 children for 10 years: grades K-8.
Karen received her Bachelor's degree in business and public administration from the University of Maryland and her Master's in Education from Notre Dame of Maryland University. She is currently working on her Educational Specialist degree in Gifted and Talented as she feels there is a need to educate people about this unique and sometimes forgotten population.
Karen lives in Southdown Shores, a community in Edgewater. Both Karen and her husband R.T. (of almost 30 years) grew up in Southdown. Karen moved 2 streets over from her childhood house after purchasing her in-law's house 28 years ago. Yes, their roots are deep in Southdown.
Karen became an official member of DKG just this past January, but has been excited to become a member for many years. Jean Marie Hofstetter was the first person to introduce DKG to Karen. She is attracted to this international organization that inspires us to explore our future in education. Cheryl Townshend passes the torch and welcomes in our new Chapter President!

- We so appreciate the long term commitment Jean Gray has made to Delta Kappa Gamma through her work as Omega's President, State President and International President!
- We so appreciate the many hours of joy Betty Hepler brought to our chapter meetings, state conferences and international conventions as the Music Chair sharing her time and talent through song!

- The DKG Alpha Beta State Executive Board Meeting was held on Saturday, March 2 in Highland, Maryland, 8:30 am--3pm. President Karen Yancey & Jean Marie Hofstetter attended. It was a wonderful time of fellowship and a chance to continue to see how the 24 chapters in our State continue to help women educators.
- This year we are continuing to bring clothing, jewelry, purses, or household goods for consignment where Jeannie Haugh will be delivering them.
- February 19th we met at Calvary United Methodist Church in Annapolis for a little potluck and some Humor Therapy with our own Dr. Beverly Eanes. It was well attended by several Omega sisters. Laughter is indeed the best medicine, and we all walked away with a lighter heart and smiles on our faces! Thank you, Beverly!
- On January 24th, we had our first 2019 meeting at The Blackwall Barn & Lodge in Gambrills. New member Dianne Lloyd led us all in a book talk on One Word That Will Change Your Life by Jon Gordon, Dan Britton, & Jimmy Page.
- Do you have one word that will change your life? These seven ladies (see picture below!) who attended Omega Chapter's January meeting do. After reading the book, each of these current and future members selected a word that would guide their personal and professional lives for the year. Reflections shared during the book discussion were how easy these authors brought the spiritual life into the personal and professional worlds. Words shared included BALANCE! GRATEFUL! FINISH! TRUST! WELLNESS! CONNECTED! and HAPPINESS! This activity is being conducted with businesses, schools, friends, and families. One Counselor in the group has simulated this with elementary age students who then shared their words with classmates and teachers. Some have kept the same word from year to year as it means different things throughout one's life. Teachers have posted their word in hallways and videotaped children explaining their words to the class. Next steps are focused on making the ONE WORD visible and involves each Sister sharing their word with their teammates, their stretch team. Keeping teammates accountable by asking periodically "How has your word changed your life?" and " How does this word help you reach success?" are just a few examples how they will keep each other accountable. Pick up a copy of the book and you too can make a difference implementing the ONE WORD strategy. (Thanks Jean Marie Hofstetter for this eloquent write up!)
- Alpha Beta State Organization held its Society Workshop on Saturday, November 3 , 2018 at Ashton United Methodist Church. Sisters from across the state enjoyed sessions focused on Artful Journaling, How to Publish Your Book, and Exercise for Healthy Living. A special highlight was the kick-off by the Keynote Speaker: Dr. Hattie N. Washington. Entitled "Be Driven to Succeed: Lessons Learned", Dr. Washington shared her experiences as a key educator. She shared structures for supporting students as well as adult leaders. Her theme for acquiring excellence paralleled ABS's biennium motto of "Grow, Change, Soar." Those in attendance were so moved by her passion as an educator. They were lined up to purchase this Inspirational Mentor's books- especially her Aunt Hattie's Southern Comfort Food & Beyond Cookbook! Pictured below with Dr. Washington are our 3 Omega Sisters in attendance, Betty Helpler, Jean Marie Hofstetter and our President Karen Yancey.
- On October 21st, we had a CABI Fundraiser as a fundraiser for the Betty Ann White Scholarship fund. Regina Barnes, an Omega Sister, once again shared the Fall CABI fashions and donated profits from this sale to the Scholarship Fund. Cheryl Townshend was our gracious hostess for this event. Photographed modeling CABI clothing (see below) are Emma (guest), Marsha Stewart, Renee (guest), Regina, Jean Marie Hofstetter and Cheryl. Also in attendance but not pictured were 2 of our newest members- Di Lloyd and Casey Perkins plus a future DKG member Alison Russo. Thanks to all who supported this Scholarship Fundraiser.
- The First meeting of the new biennium was September 16th where we had our Installation-Induction-Honor Ceremony, attended by 20 members and 1 visitor. We installed Karen Yancy as our new president for 2018-2020. In addition:

- Our February meeting had 16 of us gather together to listen to Melissa Major (a nominee as a semi-finalist for Anne Arundel County Public School Teacher of the Year) present about "Change Makers." This tied in beautifully with collecting change to build our Omega Scholarship. Here's a little bit about Change Makers from Melissa:
- "In a world where change is the only constant, teaching our students to thrive under variable conditions is essential. By focusing on specific skills, we can prepare our students to become successful citizens, innovators, and entrepreneurs. Changemaking builds students' skills in four key attributes: empathy, leadership, problem solving, and teamwork. Students learn to utilize these attributes to overcome problems that at first appear impossible. Their confidence and self-worth sky rocket as they realize that they don't have to wait to grow up to make a difference. It also allows all participants to discover the intersection of their skills, talents, and passions to uncover a meaningful and relevant purpose."
- Vicki Dabrowka presented "Making Sense of Maker Movement" both to our chapter in October and also at this year's DKG's Leadership Development Conference in Bowie on May 7th, 2016. The Maker Movement is a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) school initiative that is a current trend in education to build creative problem solving in our students. The Keynote, Sean McComb (2017 National Teacher of the Year) from Baltimore gave an inspiring speech about "sparking hope." 11 Omegas attended the Spring Leadership conference.

A gift card drawing brought merriment to all, as did the Colonial Style "Tussey Musseys" that the Chapter had previously created as fragrant table favors. They complimented our Colonial special speaker, complete in period attire It was a great way to welcome the holiday season! We look forward to next year when Rho will host our December 2015 brunch.
